Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Dermot Ahern T.D., announced a grant of EUR 60,538 to support the work of the European Humanities University in Vilnius, including the development of links with the University of Limerick. The grant will be used to support the university's Visual Design and Media BA program. Press release (22.05.2006)

European Humanities University International Support Committee was announced at the meeting of the EHU Board of Trustees, held on May 9, 2006 in Vilnius. This group of leading educators from Europe and North America is intended as a vehicle for expressing the solidarity of the global higher education community with EHU and the cause of academic freedom in Belarus. At present time, Committee includes 19 current and former university heads and other internationally prominent educators. The Committee’s co-chairs are Jonathan Fanton, President of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and Lloyd Axworthy, President of the University of Winnipeg and former Foreign Minister of Canada.

The Committee on Culture, Science and Education of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly adopted a statement on academic freedom in Belarus at the conclusion of its colloquy on university autonomy and accountability in the 21st century, held in Prague on 30-31 March 2006. In the statement, the Council of Europe parliamentarians strongly condemned denial of academic freedom in Belarus. Furthermore, “the Committee welcomed the support that the international community and in particular Lithuania provided to the European Humanities University which had to go into exile from Minsk (Belarus) to Vilnius (Lithuania). It encouraged member governments as well as universities in Europe to co-operate with the European Humanities University and facilitate student and faculty exchanges.” PACE statement on academic freedom in Belarus (31.03.2006)

Following its meeting in Luxembourg on March 27, 2006, the General Assembly of the European University Foundation/Campus Europae has passed a communiqué, which reads, “The General Assembly warmly congratulates the European Humanities University on its formal accreditation as an international university in Lithuania. The EHU is now in a position to resume its active membership in the Campus Europae network and to continue to contribute for the democratic development of Belarus.” EUF/CE communiqué (27.03.2006)

On March 24, 2006, the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) will sign an agreement with the European Humanities University (EHU) in Vilnius in support of this Belarusian university in exile. This agreement worth € 2.78 million will enable 350 students from Belarus to study at the EHU for three years in various degree programs. The European Commission is the biggest donor with € 2.2 million. NCM press-release (23.03.2006)

The Government of the Republic of Lithuania approved the establishment and accreditation of the European Humanities University (EHU) as a Lithuanian institution of higher learning. With this accreditation, the European Humanities University becomes the 22nd university in Lithuania.
Experts from the Center for Quality Assessment in Higher Education and the University Commission of Research and Education Institutions Evaluation Council reviewed the European Humanities University’s application for accreditation according to Lithuanian legislation. The registration of EHU is valid in Lithuania until the University can return to Belarus as a fully functioning institution of higher learning.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution on situation in Belarus on the eve of the presidential election. The PACE resolution inter alia urges President Lukashenko and the Belarusian authorities to “respect academic freedom and in particular provide appropriate conditions for the European Humanities University to return to Minsk” (12.11). Furthermore, the Assembly invites the European Union to “continue supporting the European Humanities University in exile in Vilnius” (15.4). (26.01.2006)

In January 2006, the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) is launching a joint project with European Humanities University, supported by the European Commission under the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights. NCM press release (19.12.2005)

The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) has awarded the European Humanities University a grant of $50,000 to support the university’s efforts to rebuild as a university-in-exile in Vilnius, Lithuania. Press release (12.12.2005)

European Parliament adopted a Resolution on Political Situation and Independence of the Media in Belarus. Two articles of the resolution raise the issue of European Humanities University and its students. (07.07.2005)







The General Assembly of the European Universities Foundation / Campus Europae (EUF/CE) took place in Luxembourg on October 4, 2004. The General Assembly has adopted a Resolution on European Humanities University, where it notes, that "The European Humanities University (EHU) was, and still is, a member in good standing of the EUF/CE", as well as that "Because of the intervention of the Belarus Government to curb the academic freedom and academic development of the EHU, and without any fault on its part, the EHU was deprived of official university status within Belarus and, therefore, cannot - at the present time - accredit its own academic qualifications." A group of European intellectuals, including Pierre Hassner, Evhen Bystrytskii, Hans-Georg Wieck, Bronislaw Geremek, Vladimir Gelman, Klaus Segbers, Antoni Kaminski, John Loewenhardt, Raimundas Lopata, Marie Mendras, Dmitrii Trenin, Juergen Habermas, Gesine Schwan and Peter Eigen, sent an open letter to EHU to encourage the University Corporation and its Rector, Professor Mikhailov.
